Group Programs

Child Aware run a number of groups throughout the year to assist children to enhance skills learnt in individual sessions and learn new skills alongside their peers.

Groups are facilitated by highly trained psychologists or mental health accredited social workers at our Carina and Strathpine office locations. Parents are encouraged to participate and are included in the information session for the first 30 minutes of each session whilst afternoon tea is provided for the children.

Children with a Mental Health Care Plan from their GP may be eligible for a rebate, reducing the out of pocket cost. The cost of the group is $70 per session.

See group dates below and register your interest by calling 1300 914 318 or emailing info@childaware.com.au

It's OK to be Me! - Strathpine

A group for young girls of high school age who want to improve their self-esteem, body image and have more confidence to get through tricky situations. A group to gain support from other girls and talk about current stressors and issues faced in today’s world.

A CBT and art and play based experiential approach will be used to highlight strengths, cope with making mistakes and letting go of unrealistic expectations. The group activities will challenge the girls to be real, to reflect on their worries and to embrace the idea that It’s Okay to Be Me. Mindfulness and journalling techniques will be taught for self care and wellness in everyday life.

Sessions will include such activities as - Forcing Failure (activities where our aim is to fail), Self Portraits mixing opposites (the pros and cons in all of us make us who we are), Soapboxing (Expressing opinions, having a say, getting comfortable with assertiveness), Magnets (thoughts attract evidence, change the thought, attract different evidence, possibly a word collage), Cognitive distortions (create comic strips to depict one, kind of a puppet show), Body parts (lots of games to use our body parts in different and wacky ways, but not just about them looking gorgeous). A general environment of relaxation and fun - quick mindfulness exercises to begin and start the sessions. Participants will also be asked to journal (written or art or photos) between weeks.

The Take Action Anxiety Program

An estimated 1.3 million adult Australians will suffer from an anxiety disorder this year. About half of them may have experienced their first symptoms by the age of 11. While anxiety is a normal

part of childhood, around 12 per cent of children develop a diagnosable disorder, experiencing fear, nervousness, and shyness, and avoiding places and activities.

Without treatment these children are at higher risk to perform poorly in school, miss out on

important social experiences, and experience physical complaints such as sleeplessness,

    stomach aches and headaches.

Years of psychological research tells us that a short cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) program helps anxious children cope better both socially and academically as well as avoid a possible lifetime of debilitating emotional distress. The Take Action program, targeted toward children aged 4-7 and 8-12 years.
